Photo Title & What: Waxing Moon
Where: Grand Rapids, MI
When: March 3, 2009
A friend of mine mentioned the other day that she wishes she had a better camera so she could take a photo of the moon. And it reminded me of a conversation I’d had with a camera guy at a camera store a year & a half back about wanting a nicer camera because the moon was looking so cool that week. What that guy had told me was “wow, the moon’s a hard thing to photograph”.
Thud. That’s what my heart did. And I didn’t attempt to take a photo of the moon for over a year because of it. Then I took out my camera one night and took this photo after a number of attempts at messing with the settings.
So, when my friend mentioned this I immediately thought “take this camera dud” and went on to explain how she could use her current camera to take photos of the moon.
And I learned something new, or maybe it would be more accurate to say I better defined a belief I hold dear about photography…
There may be subjects that are difficult to photograph, but the drive to take the photograph is much more important than the difficulty of the subject. Never will I discourage someone from taking a difficult photo – and I hope that camera dud learns the same lesson some day.
